Adamawa senator hails Supreme Court judgement affirming Governor Fintiri

The chairman, senate committee on science, technology and innovation, Senator Aminu Iya Abbas (Adamawa Central Senatorial District), has congratulated Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, on his Governorship Election Petition appeal victory at the Supreme Court.

According to his special assistant (media & public affairs), Ahmad Muhammad Danyaro, in a press statement on Wednesday, the senator said Governor Fintiri won the 2023 Governorship election convincingly, saying that the judgment was an affirmation of Adamawa mandate freely given to the Governor during the election.

He said; “this judgement did not come as a surprise because PDP won the governorship election convincingly and today the apex court has spoken loud and clear. Our State now needs all of us, to work together to deliver the the dividends of democracy for the benefit of all.

“I therefore call on all gubernatorial candidates in the 2023 election to accept the Supreme Court judgment and join hands with Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to move Adamawa State to a greater height. I also call on good people of Adamawa to continue to support the policies and programmes of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’ administration in order to build a greater Adamawa State.

The Supreme Court had earlier affirmed the election of Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Adamawa ogvernor.

A five-member panel of the apex court unanimously dismissed the appeal by Aishatu Ahmed Dahiru, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last governorship election in the state.

In the lead judgment, Justice John Okoro, who presided over the panel, held that the declaration of Dahiru winner of the election by the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) was unlawful and a nullity.

Justice Okoro further held that it was the Returning Officer of any election that is empowered by the Electoral Act to announce the results of an election and that any other person, who assumes that rules, acts illegally.
