AKTH Pioneers Laparoscopic Obesity Operation in Nigeria
Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Kano has conducted the first laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, popularly known as Obesity Operation, for a 60-year old man who weighed of 156 Kilogram before the procedure.
A consultant surgeon in the hospital’s department of surgery, Dr Usman Bello disclosed this to the Information and Public Relations Unit of the hospital while discharging the patient recently.
He said the patient (name withheld) presented to the specialty clinic of the hospital with multiple health problems such as hypertension, diabetes and background treated ischemic heart disease.
Upon evaluation a team of doctors from four specialty units resolved that the patient needed to undergo the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in order to b relieved of his medical conditions, the information department told Nigerian Sketch in a short text message.
The patient was said to have lost 35 kilogram of his weight at the end of the surgery when he was discharged from the hospital.
Dr Usman was quoted to have said that the patient’s weight will return to normal gradually without taking any sliming drugs.
AKTH claims to be the only tertiary hospital in Nigeria to have started this operation, and called on people, especially those with obesity to come over for the surgery in order to live a healthy life.
The hospital said a team of doctors and health professionals from Medicine, Dietetics and Surgery departments will conduct a virtual lecture to create awareness on the consequences of obesity as part of their contribution to the World Obesity Day on Thursday 4th March 2021.
