Appeal Court Clears Former Kano Governor, Shekarau, of Money Laundering

Appeal Court Clears Former Kano Governor, Shekarau, of Money Laundering

Former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has been discharged by the Kano division of the Court of Appeal, in a N950 million money laundering case.

The Court of Appeal, in a judgement read by Justice Amina Audi Wambai, said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has failed to establish a prima facie case of alleged money laundering to the tune of N950 million against the former governor, thereby discharging and acquitting him.

The former governor, who was arraigned in May, 2018 for his alleged involvement in the receipt of N950 million from the former minister of petroleum resources, Deizani Alison Maduekwe to distribute to PDP members in Kano during the 2015 presidential election, was discharged on Tuesday, as the Court of Appeal upheld his counsel’s no-case submission before a Federal High court in Kano presided by Justice Lewis Allagoa.

The Federal High Court had ruled that the EFCC had established a prima facie case of alleged money laundering against the former governor.

Nigerian Sketch observes that with this, unless the EFCC appealed further, Shekarau, is in the clear regarding the allegation.
