Bare Knuckle Fighter Justin Thornton Dies a Month after KO Loss

Bare knuckle fighter, Justin Thornton, died on Monday after he has stayed in coma for over a month following a knockout defeat at BKFC 20 in August.

The MMA veteran sadly died on October 4 at the age of 38 after suffering a stoppage defeat at an event in August.

The heavyweight bout ended in the first round after Dillon Cleckler knocked out Thornton with a huge right hook.

The bare knuckle promotion announced the death of Thornton, issuing a statement on social media.

The statement reads:

“This morning we were very saddened to be notified of the passing of one of our fighters, Justin Thornton, who competed at BKFC 20 on August 20, 2021.

“We join the rest of the combat sports community in sending our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Per Thornton’s Facebook page, he was hospitalised after suffering a knockout in a clash that lasted just 19 seconds.

He fell face first to the canvas after getting tagged in the middle of the ring.

Reports claim he was partially paralysed after the fight and placed on a ventilator in a hospital for several weeks while also fighting off an infection from a spinal cord injury.

Thornton made his name in MMA, fighting in regional promotions and had a professional record of 6-18.

He fought UFC heavyweights Walt Harris and Chase Sherman during his MMA career.

What Caused Justin Thornton’s Death?

While many fans are searching for Justin Thornton’s cause of death, there isn’t any official detail surrounding his death cause. His family also has not released any statement surrounding his death cause at this time.

Thornton had reportedly been battling serious injuries from the fight, but it’s unclear if the KO had anything to do with the passion. A cause of death has yet to be revealed.

Thornton hadn’t won an MMA fight since October 2016. Justin’s most recent MMA loss came in less than one minute to MMA promoter Lex McMahon, who was fighting as a pro for the 1st time.

He had been professionally fighting for over a decade, and his first pro fight was in 2008. Thornton’s career MMA record was 8-16, all for regional promotions.

The fight with Dilon Cleckler was a rematch. Dillon beat him under the Island Fights banner in 2013.
