Biu Emir Dies at 80
The Emir of Biu, Borno state, Umar Mustapha Aliyu, is dead, his eldest son, Maina Mustapha and the Borno State government have revealed.
The late monarch was said to have died late Monday at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe at the age of 80 after a brief illness.
The Borno State government confirmed the death of the monarch Tuesday morning through the commissioner for home affairs, information and culture, Alhaji Babakura Abba-Jato, who issued a statement in Maiduguri to that effect.
He said in the statement that “His royal highness the emir of Biu, Mai Umar Mustafa Aliyu has answered the call of Allah Subuhanahu wa Taa La.
“The late Emir was appointed in June 1989. He died this morning at the age of 80. He will be laid to rest in Biu at 2pm today according to palace sources. May his soul rest in perfect peace, Ameen.”
The Emir was born on the 9th of November 1940 in Biu, and attended Kwaya Kusar Junior Primary School between 1947 and 1949 and Biu Central Primary School from 1950 to 1953 before going to Hausari Primary School in Maiduguri between 1953 and 1955.
He was at various times a veterinary attendant (1958), member representing Biu Emirate at the Borno State Council of Arts and Culture, and District Head of Biu town from 1975 to 1989 when he became the Emir of Biu.
Nigerian Sketch learnt that the Biu Emir Dies at 80 leaving behind four wives, over 70 children and 200 grandchildren.
As preparations for the burial of the emir get underway, condolences have been received at the palace of the late monarch as well as the Borno State Government House in Maiduguri.
As of the time we published this story, dignitaries within the state and from across the country have continued to send in their messages of condolence to the state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum.
