BLASPHEMY: Abduljabbar Arrested, Arraigned, Remanded in Kano

Men of the Nigeria Police Force, Kano State command, on Friday arrested Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, the Islamic preacher who was suspended from further preaching in the state by the government.

Authorities in Kano State said Abduljabbar’s arrest signals the commencement of the processes towards his prosecution for offences that border on blasphemy, incitement and sundry offences

They said he would be prosecuted according to Islamic Law.

Kano State commissioner for information, Muhammad Garba, confirmed the arrest, saying he would remain in prison till July 28.

In a statement on Friday night, the commissioner said Abduljabbar had been arraigned before a court.

He said the court ordered that he should be remanded in prison till July 28.

“Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, the Kano-based Islamic cleric famous for his controversial religious commentaries and statements that are regarded as statements mortifying the companions and sacrilegious to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) has been charged to court for blasphemy.”

“The development followed the receipt of the First Information Report from the police by the Office of the Attorney General and commissioner for justice which prepared charges against the cleric.

“Abduljabbar was subsequently arraigned on Friday, July 16 before an Upper Sharia Court Judge, Kofar Kudu, Alkali Ibrahim Sarki Yola, where the charges that included blasphemy, incitement, and sundry offences were mentioned.

“After the court sitting, it adjourned the case to July 28, while the scholar would remain under police custody until Monday when he would be sent to prison till the adjourned date.”

Abduljabbar was, last week, engaged in debate with Islamic scholars in Kano, and it turned out against him as he could not substantiate the authorities he gave for his alleged offensive utterances.

The moderator of the debate, Professor Salisu Shehu, declared that Abduljabbar failed to answer questions and clear himself of the allegations levelled against him.

Abduljabbar said thereafter that he was not given enough time and that he was asked questions in areas he does not expect.

He later released an audio clip in which he said he had renounced his stand on the utterances he made.
