CBN governor appears before Reps committee over new naira notes

CBN governor appears before Reps committee over new naira notes

The Central Bank Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has heeded the invitation of the ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives which is investigating the scarcity of the new naira notes in the country.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, had on Thursday stated that he will not hesitate to ask the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to issue an arrest warrant on the Godwin Emefiele to compel the apex bank chief to appear before the House.

The bank had earlier fixed 31 January as the deadline for the usage of the old notes but later shifted the date to February 17, following outcries that the new notes were not in circulation while the old notes have not been substantially called in.

The scarcity of the new notes forced the House to set up an ad hoc committee to resolve the difficulties between the CBN and commercial banks, despite the insistence of Emefiele that many of the banks were hoarding the notes.

Nigerians have continued to undergo various levels of stress to get the new notes.
