Court orders sale of Michael Essien’s mansions worth millions of dollars

Two houses belonging to former Ghanaian player, Michael Essien in Accra, are set to be put on the market for sale.

This comes after the commercial division of a Ghanaian High Court ordered the sale on June 12. The court ordered for the mansions to be put up for auction.

Essien is set to lose his mansions at East Legon and Trassaco.

The report shared by the Daily Guide has sparked rumours about the state of the beloved Ghanaian Chelsea football star after his retirement.

Essien has yet to respond to the report about his mansions going on sale, as rumours about the former Chelsea superstar spread online. However, a new article by Modern Ghana claimed that Essien had faced crucial challenges in his business and investment ventures after his retirement from international football in 2018.

The article established that financial pressures have influenced the sale of his properties in East Legon and Trassco, one of which is valued between $20 and 30 million.

Career beginnings

Michael Essien, a Ghanaian professional footballer, was born on December 3, 1982, in Accra, Ghana. He began his football career with the local club Liberty Professionals before moving to Europe in 2000. Essien initially had a trial at Manchester United but was not granted a work permit and instead joined French club Bastia. After spending three seasons with Bastia and appearing in over 60 matches, he transferred to Ligue 1 title holders Lyon in 2003.

Success in France and England

At Lyon, Essien won back-to-back league titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05 and was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year in 2005. His impressive performance caught the attention of Chelsea, who signed him for a £24.4 million transfer fee in August 2005. This made him the most expensive African footballer at the time. During his time at Chelsea, Essien helped the club win two Premier League titles (2006 and 2010), three FA Cups, one League Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in 2011-12. He also won the Chelsea Goal of the Season award twice (in the 2006-07 and 2008-09 seasons).

International career and later years

Essien has also had an impressive international career representing Ghana at various youth levels before making his senior team debut in January 2002. He has represented his country at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and two FIFA World Cups (in 2006 and 2014). Although he missed Ghana’s second-place finish at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury, he returned to help the team qualify for the 2014 World Cup. In March 2017, Essien joined Indonesia’s Persib Bandung but played only one season before being released. In 2019 he signed with Azerbaijan’s Sabail FK. Currently, Essien is a member of Nordsjælland’s coaching staff in Denmark.
