Court Revokes Maina’s Bail, Commits Him to Prison Till End of Trial

Former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina, would henceforth be attending his trial from prison custody, the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria ordered on Friday.

Maina, who is being prosecuted by the EFCC on N2 billion money laundering charges, had jumped bail and fled to the country.

Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mohammed Abubakar’s Justice Okon Abang had applied orally for Maina’s bail to be revoked and for him to be committed to prison pending the conclusion of his trial.

Maina was arrested on Thursday and repatriated to Nigeria after he had jumped bail and escaped through the Nigerian border to neighboring Niger Republic, truncating the continuation of his trial.

Maina’s new counsel, Abel Adaji, opposed the EFCC counsel application, but failed to sway the court.

Maina said he was in Niger Republic on health ground and that he had notified authorities before he left. His claim could not be independently verified by Nigerian Sketch.
