Court sends ‘demonic’ Nigerian to death for ‘satanic’ killing of own twins

Justice Agness Onyebueke of the Cross River State High Court in Akamkpa has sentenced one Anyabime Festus Udo to death by hanging for killing his twin daughters.

Festus poisoned the girls, Mfoniso Anyanime and Emediong Anyanime, in 2017, claiming they were witches responsible for his “predicament”.

The judge termed his action “satanic, demonic, and beyond human comprehension.”

Reports said on January 10, 2017, the convict gave his 11-year-old girls a malt drink mixed with acid. One died on the spot while the second crawled to the road where someone rescued her before she died the following day in the hospital.

Lead counsel of Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, BRCI, James Ibor, Esq. commended the judgment, noting that it came shortly after the United Nations urged nations to take measures against abuses linked to witchcraft beliefs and ritual sacrifice.

UN has announced its commitment to tacking the ongoing abuses of human rights that are taking place around the world.

UN’s Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Kate Gilmore, once said “be it in the name of witchcraft or spirituality or religion or political ideology; long standing tradition or recent fad; be it in the name of knowledge or ignorance: beatings, banishment, cutting of body parts, amputation of limbs, torture and murder – these are appalling violations of human rights – no matter the attempted excuse, no matter the proffered explanation.”
