COVID-19: Police, Kano Govt Aid Kano Turf Club to Disobey President Buhari, Court Orders

The Kano Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Saturday fully supported the flaunting of a court order as well as President Muhammadu Buhari’s Coronavirus Disease (COVID-190 Health Protection Regulation 2021.

A state High Court on Friday gave an order to restrain the chairman of Kano StateTurf Club, Tajuddeen Aminu Dantata and the Northern State Turf Club from carrying out a horse racing tournament at the Kano Race Course on Saturday and Sunday following an exparte motion moved a private legal practitioner, Basiru Ibrahim, who submitted that such a gathering is against the restriction put in place by President Muhammadu Buhari to protect the health and wellbeing of Nigerians in the face of the widespread and rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

Nigerian Sketch’s findings revealed that the state police command, the Kano Turf Club and the Northern States Turf Club were well aware of the court order but flagrantly disobeyed it by holding the horse racing event at the Race Course on Saturday.

The state commissioner of police received a letter from Farhan Law Firm on Friday requesting him to ensure compliance with the court order.

Also, Tajuddeen Aminu Dantata on Friday responded to the court order by causing a Memorandum of Appearance to be entered for him and the Northern States Turf Club, and their counsel, Messr Salisu Sule 4 Co filed a Motion Notice on the same day.

The Presidential Regulations 2021 specifically ordered that “Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, and other relevant Local Government, State and Federal Government agencies are hereby directed to enforce the provisions of these Regulations.”

Regulation 36 provides that “Any officer of the enforcement agencies who fails, neglects, or refuses to enforce the provisions of these regulations shall be subject to disciplinary action by the disciplinary body of his respective agency.”

A health service official in Kano State who does not want to be named urged the inspector-general of police to take disciplinary action on Kano State commissioner of police “for helping Tajuddeen Dantata, Kano State Turf Club and the Northern State Turf Club to disobey President Buhari and a court order.”

Kano State government, which was the 3rd defendant in the matter also gave its nod for the tournament to hold in disobedience to the court order and the Presidential Regulations.

Nigerian Sketch observed that thousands of spectators graced the opening of the horse racing event on Saturday and participants from various Northern states took part in the tournament, which will continue on Sunday.
