Doctors Down-tool in Nigeria, as President Buhari Enjoys Foreign Medical Care

Doctors Down-tool in Nigeria, as President Buhari Enjoys Foreign Medical Care

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has embarked on a nationwide strike in defiance to pleas by the federal government.

The strike began on Thursday, two days after President Muhammadu Buhari left the country for London to attend to his personal medical challenges.

Part of the president’s campaign points prior to his election was to stop what his cohorts then called ‘medical tourism’, but he has been identified as the most traveled president so far, as far as foreign medical trips are concerned.

The doctors have sonded warnings about the impending strike action before the president left the country, leaving Nigerians to wonder if he ever cares about anything beyond himself and his immediate family.

NARD’s president, Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, announced the commencement of the strike, saying “The strike commenced 8 am, and we enjoin all resident doctors to start the strike immediately.

“We had a meeting with the minister of labour from 4 pm to about 12 am this morning, but as it stands; we are used to memorandum of understandings for over a decade now, and we insist on the implementation of what we wrote on our strike message.

“We’re not just doing this for resident doctors, we’re doing this for all health workers.”

NARD said the strike would be indefinite if salaries and allowances of members were not paid.

Nigeria’s labour and employment minister, Chris Ngige, on Wednesday appealed to the doctors to reconsider going on strike because their withdrawal of service may cause damage to the country’s health, but NARD president had countered on the same day that “I want Nigerians to ask the government to be more responsible; and there’s nothing that can make us avert this strike.”

NARD appealed to all Nigerians for understanding, saying “Nigerians must understand that we love them and the strike is not intended to hurt them but to challenge the Nigerian government @MBuhari @Fmohnigeria @LabourMinNG whose responsibilities amongst others is to care for her citizens and labour force to do the needful.”
