Don Laments ‘War-Like’ Attitude of Kano Politicians as Local Govt Councils Go to Poll Saturday

The rowdy and chaotic nature of elections in Kano State has always been a source of worry to stakeholders in the state’s politics.

The chairman, Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Prof. Ibrahim Sheka, said on Tuesday that elections in the state have always been war-like.

The election commission chairman was at the opening of training for civil society election observers for the 2021 local government elections in the state which was held at Mambayya House on Tuesday.

He decried the volatile nature of electioneering in the state, saying it is unlike any other state in the country.

He gave examples of elections he said he had witnessed Kogi, Gombe and Borno states, all which he claimed were held peaceful manners, a situation he said has never been attained in Kano State, where he said politicians behave as if the election would signal the end of the world.

“Election in Kano state requires adequate security because it always looks like the entire world is coming to an end,” he said.

Sheka said he remains optimistic that the election would be successfully conducted, with measures like adequate preparation, security and prayers put in place.

He said the exercise would be peaceful and violence-free with the assistance of all stakeholders.

According to him, all election materials were ready, and the non-sensitive ones have been distributed to various local government areas already.

Elections to the councils of all the 44 local government areas would hold on Saturday (January 16, 2021).
