ECWA Kano DCC Members Petition Trustees over Alleged Injustice, Threaten to Renounce Church

ECWA Kano DCC Members Petition Trustees over Alleged Injustice, Threaten to Renounce Church

The Kano District Church Council (DCC) of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) is in turmoil, and members have threatened, out of frustration, to renounce the church and join other denominations.

The members of the DCC from nine Local Church Councils (LCCs) that comprise of Gazobi, Sumana, Nassarawa, Katsinawa, Karefa, Gani, Kureni, Labuje and Kargon Kuki, accused the present ECWA executives, especially the secretary-general, of insensitivity, injustice and disobedience to the provisions of the constitution of the Church, saying they no longer have confidence the executives to lead members to the Promised Land.

In a petition dated 19th April, 2021, they accused the general secretary, Rev Yunusa Nmadu Jnr of abuse of office, saying he connived with “Rev Mutala Mati and Rev (Dr) David Gyet to oppress, harass and subject the 9 LCCs to severe injustice by making moves to suspend the 9 Local Overseers (LOs) contrary to and on total disregard to the ECWA constitution and bye-laws.”

They said both Mati and Gyet had been indicted by “a high powered committee comprising of senior legal practitioners fro their involvement in ungodly act of framing one Rev Mato Nayaro..”

They said they have been tolerant of the policy of exclusion in the leadership of the Kano DCC for about 20 years, but trouble began in 2017 and 2018 “when some people from the 9 LCCs were elected into some positions in the DCC and the then DCC secretary, Rev Samaila Musa wrote a petition to the ECWA Executives and upon a thorough investigation it was dismissed for lack of merit.”

They further accused ECWA general secretary of not allowing DCC elections to hold on two different occasions.

The members said they urged the Board of Trustees of the Church to call the executives to order “before it is too late”, but the Board is still yet to act on their petition.

The members in a petition to the Board signed by representatives of each LCC said disharmony within the Church became unbearable when electoral processes of the Kano DCC elections were truncated on the 17th of April, 2021.

They said the ECWA executives sent Rev. Ben Mainasara (the director of church relations) to the election venue wit two letters signed by the ECWA secretary general, one mandating Mianasara to dissolve the Local Overseers (LOs) of the LCCs. The second letter mandated Mainasara “to share elective positions in the DCC contrary and in total infraction of the ECWA constitution.”

They alleged that Mainasara’s role at the election venue created “confusion and commotion at the election venue as a result of which the election could not hold.”

According to them, the crisis dated back to 2019 when Rev Samaila Kogo won the DCC’s chairmanship election, and Rev Murtatla Mar who lost in the election connived with Rev Samaila Musa and Dr David Gyet to start trouble, asking four LCCs (Bari, Barbaji, Karaye and Karshi) not to remit 25% and all other ECWA remittances.
