EDO 2021: Allegations of Medal Black Market Threaten Rugby

EDO 2021: Allegations of Medal Black Market Threaten Rugby

By Abdulgafar Oladimeji

Deliberations are ongoing among concerned stakeholders whose states have qualified to compete in rugby at the coming National Sports Festival to opt out of the fiesta.

One of the officials told Nigerian Sketch that they are considering boycotting the rugby event due to the extent of sharp practices that are going on underneath the surface, alleging that medals are not likely to be won on merit.

He said, “we may not go to Edo with our rugby team. No need to spend our money to take our team to Edo, only to be robbed of our chances.”

He said there have been schemes on ground to make medals in rugby porous and for sale.

“Before our going to Edo, someone has already decided who takes the medals. So, why bother, why waste our time and resources?

“What is going on will continue to destroy our sports and nobody seems to bother about the mess that is evident everywhere”, our source lamented.

Efforts to get the president, Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), Kelechi Mbagwu, to respond to the allegations failed.
