EFCC to Pay N1 Million for Freezing Man’s Bank Account without Court Order

A Kano State High Court presided by Hon. Justice Dije Abdu Aboki has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to pay a bank customer, Alhaji Ismail Umar, the sum of  N1 million for freezing his bank account without a court order.

In a judgement delivered on the 7th day of August, 2021, the High Court Judge frowned at self help in the conduct of government agencies and granted all the reliefs sought by the applicant.

The applicant’s lawyer, B. Y. Gambo had approached the court the challenge what he called the transgression of EFCC on his client, who operates an account with United Bank of Africa (UBA).

He told the court that his client’s account had been unlawfully frozen by EFCC while his client was later arrested and taken to the Kaduna zonal office of the commission over a civil transaction with one Isa Moddibo.

Gambo challenged the arrest and detention as well as the freezing of the account in court.

In her judgement, Justice Aboki granted all the relieves sought by the Applicant and further awarded a damages of N1million to him to be paid by EFCC.
