Enugu Rangers grab 8th NPFL title, secure CAF Champions League slot ahead Remo, Enyimba, Shooting Stars

Enugu Rangers have won the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title after a 2-0 home win over Bendel Insurance on Sunday.

The Flying Antelopes now occupy the top spot on the log with an unassailable 67 points, having secured their eighth league title in Nigerian football history.

Rangers’ closest rivals, Remo Stars and Enyimba, both lost their respective matches against Sunshine Stars and Sporting Lagos, respectively. Remo Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat in Akure, while Enyimba fell to a late 2-1 loss at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

The victory for Rangers came through goals from Kenechukwu Agu in the 33rd minute and Chidiebere Nwobodo in the 65th minute. In his reaction, an elated Rangers’ Coach, Fidelis Illechukwu, said: “We are the champions; we are the champions of 2023/2024 NFFL.”

Rangers have previously won the NPFL title seven times: in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984, and 2016. Only Enyimba, who have nine league titles to their name, have more titles than Rangers.

With one game remaining against relegated Gombe United at Pantami Stadium next week, Rangers will be crowned champions at their final home game of the season.

The team automatically qualifies for the CAF Champions League representing Nigeria. The second Champions League slot is now left for Remo Stars, Enyimba, and Shooting Stars to fight for on the last game day.
