FG Moves to Halt Labour Protest, Meets with Labour Leaders

FG Moves to Halt Labour Protest

Nigeria’s government has raised a delegation to meet with organised Labour on Thursday in order to discourage the planned nationwide protest against the hike in fuel price and electricity tariff.

The delegation would be meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to convince them to neglect the protest.

The director of press, federal ministry of labour and employment, Mr Charles Akpan, told Nigerian Sketch in a message that the meeting will be hosted by the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige.

The labour leaders have confirmed that the meeting will hold and that they will participate.

A similar meeting earlier in the month failed to sway the labour unions, even though the government strived to explain the rationale behind the deregulation of the oil sector as well as the electricity tariff increases.

Today’s is expected to either end in another stalemate or, at best, in government shifting ground a bit on the increase in the price hikes.

On the other hand, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has also planned to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday to intervene in the building faceoff between the federal government and the labour unions.

NGF’s head of media affairs, Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, said in a statement that all governors are expected to attend the meeting as the matter is considered to be of urgent national importance, which needs to be quickly resolved

What do you think the labour unions should do as FG moves to halt labour protest.
