Forget Routine Press Statements, Act Decisively on Bandits, Atiku Tells Buhari

Nigeria’s former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has said it is not enough for President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration to be issuing cut-and-dried press statements condemning the atrocities of bandits and terrorists in the country, tasking his government to apprehend and prosecute the criminals.

In a statement he issued on Saturday over the murder of aides and security details of the Emir of Kaura Namoda, Alhaji Sanusi Muhammad Asha by bandits who attacked his convoy on Friday, Atiku said the current spate of killing in the country is worrisome.

He expressed charged the government to act decisively on the way bandit take Nigerians lives so frequently and easily.

He also said a situation where the people are afraid to leave their homes for the fear of their lives being terminated by bandits was a cause for anxiety, asking the government to respond with tougher and more proactive than what is obtainable currently.

“Condemnation of attacks is not enough to reassure citizens who are constantly living in fear.

“The government should speed up the prosecution of terrorists and bandits in order to send a strong message to these outlaws that there are consequences for wilful taking of life.

“The frequency and ease with which the bandits are killing innocent people almost on a daily basis is embarrassing and should be halted lest outlaws are allowed to rule over affairs.
