Ganduje Ambushes Muhuyi Magaji, Mobilises Kano Assembly to Suspend Head of State Anti-Graft Agency

Kano State governor has finally succeeded in the first leg of his plan to remove the chairman of the State Public Complaint and Anti-corruption Commission (PCACC), Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado from office

The State House of Assembly on Monday suspended Muhuyi for a month, saying the suspension was due to his refusal to accommodate an accountant posted to the agency from the office of the state Accountant General.

Muhuyi was reported to have said the law that created PCACC does not envisage the appointment of any staff to the commission from any quota outside the commission, insisting that the commission will not take any accountant that it did not appoint.

The office of the state accountant-general therefore intimated the House of Assembly of Muhuyi’s rejection of its posting, adding that the accountant he appointed is not qualified because he is on grade level 4, contrary to civil service requirements.

This prompted the proceedings that led to his suspension.

The House suspended Muhuyi for a month, a period during which members said investigations would have been completed on the allegations against him.

The House appointed its chairman on public complaint committee, Umar Musa Gama, to head the investigative committee.

Members  of the committee include Lawan Shehu, chairman House committee on Judiciary; Salisu Ibrahim Doguwa, chairman House ommittee on public account; Magaji Dahiru Zarewa. House committee chairman on finance; and Sale Ahmad Marke, chairman House committee on Hajj.

The deputy director of the House legal department and the secretary of the House public account committee will serve as co-secretary.

The committee has been given two weeks within which to submit its report.

The suspension of Muhuyi did not come as a surprise to most watchers of events in the state, as most people knew that the relationship between him and Ganduje had gone sour over his attempt to unravel an alleged misappropriation of public funds by the governor’s wife and daughter, especially at the state Cancer Centre, a mega project that gulped huge amounts to execute.

A Kano Government House source told Nigerian Sketch that Muhuyi’s suspension “is a prelude to his removal. The governor has just pounced on Muhuyi from an ambush he laid for him.

“You see, Muhuyi himself knew that he had outdone himself and it was over for him. Beyond all these issues of an accountant, the governor is beaming his searchlight on what he believed was Muhuyi’s lack of accountability with funds he was alleged to have been getting from international donour organisations.

“Muhuyi reciprocated by beaming his own searchlight on the governor’s alleged involvement of his wife and children in the execution of projects carried out with public funds.

“It was a dicey situation. It was a case of dog eating dog.”

Our source said the governor temporarily “appeared to have allowed things go by. He slowed down after the initial attempts to remove Muhuyi, and when the man thought he was having a breathing space, the governor pounced. I told you it was an ambush.”

The suspended chairman has not responded to his suspension, but a close ally revealed that he has been in consultation with his lawyers since his suspension was announced.
