JUST IN: 2020 Dala Hard Court Tennis Tournament Won’t Hold
The 2020 edition of the renowned annual Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship would not hold, according to the competition’s organisers.
Director of the competition, Yusuf Datti, revealed to journalists on Thursday that the postponement was due to considerations that the COVID-19 pandemic still poses a great risk to sportsmen and lovers in the country.
He said health issues take paramount place in the consideration of the tourney’s organisers, and that if the pandemic had been perfectly arrested in the country, the competition would have held.
Yusuf 2020 edition would have been the 34th edition of the oldest tennis tournament in Northern Nigeria supposing it was held.
“It is painful, but we thought no matter how little the risk, we need to avoid it. With the outbreak of the pandemic, no sector has not recorded loses. Dala Hard Court is not an exception.
“Be rest assured, we have no problem with our sponsors, and after painstaking discussions and consultations, we decided to postpone the 34th edition of the tournament to 2021.
“The committee acknowledged that sporting competitions have resumed around the world, especially contact sports, however the committee cannot ignore the attendant risk with this pandemic.
“We call on all stakeholders, especially our sponsors to understand and support our decision”, he pleaded.
