Juventus get 15-point deduction over financial violation

Serie A giants Juventus have been given a 15-point deduction to their league points this season, following a financial investigation, and will drop to 10th in the league.

Serie A’s FIGC Prosecutor has decided to give the Old Lady the points deduction after they were found guilty of capital gain violations.

Earlier in the season, the club’s entire board, including Pavel Nedved, quit after the investigations into the club’s finances began.

The investigation related to payments made to players during 2020 and 2021, when they agreed to take a pay cut during the Covid affected season.

It was claimed that the investigation was the ‘heaviest’ in the club’s history, even taking into account the Calciopoli scandal that saw them relegated.

FIGC Prosecutor’s request to reopen the sporting investigation into the club was accepted by the country’s Federal Court of Appeals.

Prosecutors had asked for a nine-point deduction for the team initially but have been handed 15 points instead, although they can still appeal it.

Having won Serie A for nine years in-a-row recently, the Old Lady have been without the title for the previous two years and looked unlikely to recapture it this season.

They are currently, before the ban is imposed, 10 points behind league leaders Napoli, who recently beat them 5-1, and in a battle for the top four places.

If the points deduction is upheld then it seems highly unlikely they’ll be able to compete with rivals AC Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio, Atalanta and Roma for the Champions League places.

Fellow Serie A sides Sampdoria and Empoli, who are currently 19th and 12th in the league table, had initially been implicated but were left off the new investigation.

As well as the point deduction, there was also a request to ban the likes of Andrea Agnelli, Fabio Paratici and Federico Cherubini, as well as the rest of the board at the time.

That would be bad news for Tottenham Hotspur, who could be without managing director of football Paratici for over two years, if the request is upheld.

The Italian has a good relationship with Antonio Conte, with the two men working at the Allianz Stadium before their move to north London, and had brought former Bianconeri stars Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur to Spurs, as well as former Juve product Cristian Romero.
