Kano judges not ready for e-adjudication, says attorney-general

Kano judges not ready for e-adjudication, says attorney-general

Judges in Kano State have continued to exhibit an aversion to the new trend of e-adjudication in a way that may make virtual proceedings impossible in the state.

The state’s attorney-general and commissioner for justice, M. A. Lawal, said this at an event organised by the Kano branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Tuesday.

Lawal said providing IT gadgets at the courts as well as funds to run virtual proceedings in Kano State would not suffice if judges fail to change their attitudes.

According to him, a previous state government’s effort to actualise what was then known as fast-track proceedings failed because High Courts in the state refused to utilize the gadgets provided for them.

He said the judges complained that they do not want to lose control over their records by serving them online.

Even though, he did not say what the current administration did to enhance the new trend, he encouraged lawyers and judges alike to embrace knowledge and practices that will make IT utilIsation easy for them.

Issues were raised over the propriety, capacity and the socio-economic placement of Nigeria to holistically embrace the e-adjudication or e-justice as some called it.

Fears were raised over governance failure in Nigeria, as lawyers pointed out that lack of adequate electricity, costly and ineffective telecommunication services as well as low access to the internet services as part of the major hindrances militating against it.

  1. I believe even the state government and the lawyers are not ready, because required funds for such exercise might not be available or provided and most lawyers are not e-lawyers. I think we better improve the present situation before thinking of e-adjudication
