Kano Judiciary is Financially Starved by State Government, Says Official

The Judiciary in Kano State has cried out that it is being financially starved by the state government for reasons that are unknown.

In the wake of the resistance of Kano branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to what it termed ‘unlawful’ increments in filing fees by the judiciary in Kano State, a top official told Nigeria Sketch that the judiciary has been operating under “very strained financial condition.”

The official, who pleaded not to be named, said the state government appears to hold the judiciary in some sort of disdain, relegating it to the background in the scheme of things.

He explained that “we are to have about two million naira as running cost but I can assure you that we do go for three to four months without the money been paid. It has been so tedious running things around here.

“We just have to devise ways to make things work, otherwise we would have been grounded long ago.

“If I tell you that there are times when we do not have files for our documents here, you would be surprised, but I must tell you that it could be far worse than not having files at times”, he said.

The Kano branch of the NBA had recommended that the judiciary needs to be adequately funded and promised to pursue the realization of this through engagement with the state government.

Two members of the branch are also members of the state executive council and were present at the congress meeting on Monday where a committee for the revision of filing fees submitted its reports in which it indicted the judiciary of arbitrary increments and called for a significant reduction.

The state commissioner for justice, M.A. Lawan and his commerce counterpart, Ibrahim Mukhtar were members of the committee which recommended that adequate funding of the judiciary by the government they serve was necessary.
