Kebbi Assembly Impeaches Speaker, Deputy During Recess

Kebbi State House of Assembly has impeached the Speaker, Hon. Hassan Muhammed Shallah, and his deputy, Hon. Jafaru Mohammed Zuru, for alleged embezzlement and misconduct.

The impeachment sitting was presided over by Abubakar Sabo from Birnin Kebbi North Constituency in the absence of the speaker and his deputy after resuming from a two-week recess.

The motion for impeachment was moved by Aminu Gunbi from Yauri Constituency and seconded by  Aliyu Mutubare from Kalgo Constituency.

Twelve of the 24 members of the House who were present supported the motion. The impeached speaker, his deputy and 10 other members of the House were absent.

Another motion was immediately moved by Bala Danbaba Waje from Dank/Wasagu West Constituency and was seconded by Mohammed Dantani Yellow from Shanga Constituency to appoint Habib Musa Jega as the new Speaker and Mohammed Bena as his deputy.

The Director, Legislative Duties in the House, Mohammed Usman, administered the oath of office on the new speaker in the absence of the clerk and his deputy.

Only last year, the Assembly impeached the then Speaker, Hon. Aminu Habib Musa Jega, and his Deputy, Hon. Muhammad Garba Bena, alongside with the Chief Whip and other Principal Officers of the House in November.

In his reaction, the impeached Speaker, Hassan Muhammed Shala, told newsmen during a briefing that the Assembly is on vacation and would reconvene on the 5th of next month, adding that his impeachment as carried out by the group is ridiculous.

He described his impeachment and an act of rebellion.

He pointed out that Musa Jega and his Deputy who were impeached last year are no longer members of the House because they decamped to another party and their seats have been declared vacant ever since.

He argued that the House proceeding during which he was impeached was illegal going by the fact that the entire House was on recess till next month. The impeached Speaker urged the people of the state to remain calm as nobody should take law into their hand promising that the whole imbroglio would become normal.
