LIKE GANDUJE LIKE YUSUF: Citizens blast Kano gov for involving relatives in govt

Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has nominated Mustapha Rabiu Musa, a son of his party leader and political godfather, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, for the position of commissioner in his cabinet.

Kwankwaso, a presidential candidate under the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), the same party under which Yusuf became governor in Kano State, is said to be the major decider of whatever transpires in the present government in the state.

In addition, Governor Yusuf is Kwankwaso’s in-law, having been married to the ex-governor’s daughter.

That apart, the state commissioner for environment, Nasiru Sule Garo, is Kwankwaso’s brother-in-law because the ex-governor is married to his sister.

“The government is a family affair of a sort”, said a party a loyalist who observed that the state “Government House is always buzzing with their relations.”

Other noninees

Yusuf also nominated the sacked Commissioner for Land and Physical planning, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya who threatened the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal judges in Kano for reappointment as commissioner.

The governor wrote to the State Assembly, seeking confirmation of the appointment of the nominees, according to a statement signed by the chief press secretary to Speaker, Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai.

The nominees are Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, Abdul -Jabbar Umar Garki, Shehu Usman Aliyu Karaye and Mustapha Rabiu Musa.

New ministries

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf had also notified the House of creation of new ministries.

The statement read, “In a notification letter addressed to the Kano State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt Hon Jibrin Ismail Falgore and read before the members of the House, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, said the establishment of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Eradication, Ministry of Solid Minerals Resources, Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy and Ministry of Internal Security and Special Service will be part of his administration plans to improve efficiency and performance in the state.”

According to the governor, the new ministries would go a long way in improving socioeconomic activities and delivery of good governance as well as putting the state at a vintage position to sustainable development.

The screening of the nominees is scheduled for April 2, 2024.

Citizens react

According to Daily Trust, the development has elicited reactions among some supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement who faulted the move.

Speaking, one of them who is an appointee in the government and asked not to be mentioned said, “This is not good at all for our government and the politics at all.

“The governor has deeply involved his family members into the government and Oga (Kwankwaso) too is bringing his own son. It’s not good at all.

“My biggest fear is that they will embarrass the government and themselves. This is what we were accusing the previous government of and we are now doing the worst.”

Another supporter, who craved anonymity, said, “If this is really true, then I cannot even go into my neighbourhood today because I will have to close my ears in shame. It’s too early.

“What is this? Are they not afraid of public bashing at all? Our government cannot stand a complete month or two without anything that will put it out there on the public spot? It’s honestly disappointing.”
