Low Fans Turnout Diminishes A. A. Zaura Pre-Season Football Tourney, as Jigawa Stars Shock Kano Pillars

The inaugural A. A. Zaura pre-season football competition held at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano lacked glitz, as fans shunned the tournament closing.

Pyramidsportsnews reported that the tournament, which ended on Saturday, failed to attract the football enthusiasts, despite the love for the round leather game which Kano is generally known for.

In spite of the fact that the competition featured some of the major NPFL sides like Kano Pillars, Katsina United, Jigawa Golden Stars, fans surprisingly failed to attend the games.

It was not clear why the tournament could not impress football enthusiasts, but some analysts feel it was connected to the dwindling form of Kano’s main professional club, Kano Pillars last season.

“You know Kano Pillars are the best crowd pullers in the state, and when fans are disappointed in its league performance, they become a bit disinterested, says a fan, Aliyu Mamman Kabuga.

Pyramidsportsnews quoted an anonymous football official to have said fans are somehow express aversion to politically arranged football tournaments in the state.

“The political colour of the championship may have contributed to the poor turnout,” he said

The source said “Kano is a big city that harbors people with different and from diverse political inclination and…since the name of a … politician is attached, those who differ with his camp and his party may not want to identify with the tournament.

“Also, since it was organized by politicians, majority of football stakeholders were not involved and will not get involved, and the football sector stakeholders will just dismiss it.

“Yes the opening ceremony was more flamboyant than the closing ceremony. This is largely due to the organizers.”

He said organizers of the tournament kept it as “close circle affair” and since they are not open to football affairs, most of those who have stake felt neglected and “not properly treated in terms of respect and even in terms of been assigned with some roles to play in the organization of the tournament.”

Meanwhile, Jigawa Golden Stars displaced Kano Pillars to emerge as the tournament’s champions after forcing the Kano side to a 1-1 draw, garnering seven points from three matches.
