LP’s Obi ensured Tinubu’s victory over PDP’s Atilku, says Wike
Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has given credit to the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, for the victory of All Progressives Congress (APC’s) candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Nigeria’s presidential election of February 25, 2023.
The governor said Obi was the hero of the election, explaining that power would have remained in Northern Nigeria if he (Obi) didn’t contest.
While addressing Igbo traders at a town hall in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Wike said Obi’s participation in the election guaranteed the emergence of a southerner as the president-elect.
According to the governor, the states where Obi recorded victories would have been won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and allowed the North to retain power through the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Wike has been in the forefront of the agitation that power should shift to Southern Nigeria after the eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner.
The governor aspired to contest for the presidency in PDP but was defeated in the party primaries by Atiku.
Still bitter about his defeat and Atiku’s insistence to contest despite the need to consider ‘power shift’, Wike demanded some compromises in PDP’s leadership hierarchy, which Atiku failed to meet.
Wike drew a battle-line and got other four PDP governors in his camp to fight Atiku’s ambition, and the result of the presidential election suggests that they succeeded in helping the opposition party to stop Atiku.
