LP’s senatorial candidate killed hours to election
Labour Party candidate in Saturday’s Enugu East Senatorial District election, Oyibo Chukwu, was killed 48 hours to the election.
Chukwu was killed at Amechi, Awkunanaw local government area of Enugu alongside five of his supporters while returning from a campaign rally.
The killers were also said to have burnt him and his supporters who were with him inside his car.
The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Chijioke Edeoga, confirmed the unfortunate incident, saying his party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties which felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state.
It is however observed that the region has been embroiled in violence even before the election period, and militants have vowed to cripple election in the region.
Reports of violent killing have emanated from the region, some of whichwere carried out on politicians and business men, while others were perpetrated on ordinary citizens in the course of their daily activities.
Governments at the state and federal levels have so far been unable to curtail the spate of violent activities of criminals in the region.
