MAGAJI MATO IBRAHIM: Senior Advocate who defied school authority to read law

One of the two lawyers from Kano State who were conferred with the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2022 was Magaji Mato Ibrahim, a 42-year-old down-to-earth practitioner who has had his eyes so fixated on legal practice right from his childhood.

His record of academic exploits at St. Louis and St. Thomas Catholic schools in Kano marked him out to be steered along science subjects but he defied the counselling of the school authorities, insisting he wanted to be a lawyer.

For a student who has never gone below the first or second position in class, he shocked the school principal, a German lady, by dictating in a surprisingly absolute and informed terms, at his teen age, that his ambition was to become a lawyer. Despite having contrary opinion, the principal had to concede to his wish and allow him to take the Arts subjects.

That was Magaji Mato Ibrahim, a determined personality right from the onset.

Born on 23rd March, 1979 to the family of Mr & Mrs Ibrahim Magaji aka Danfarke in Refawa Community, Rano Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria, he attended Munture Government Primary School from 1985 to 1988 and Refawa Community Primary School from 1988 to 1991. Thereafter, he started primary four and five again from 1991 to 1993 in St. Louis Nursery/Primary school.

In 1993, he wrote common entrance examination to St. Thomas Secondary School and was admitted into JSS 1 and in 1999 he completed his secondary education in the same school.

In 1999, he graduated as the best Arts student produced by the St. Thomas Secondary School, Kano with distinction in all his subjects. While in the school, he served as the school time keeper from 1995 to 1996; senior prefect from 1996 to 1999 when he finally left the school.

In 1999, he sat for WAEC and JAMB, and passed with distinction, thereby securing admission into Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to study law. He graduated in 2005 from the Faculty of Law, ABU with LLB 2nd Class Honours.

He was admitted into Nigeria Law School, Abuja camp.

While there, he was exposed to series of election petition matters in Edo, Ekiti, Lagos and a host of other states. There was no single dull moment.

After the mandatory service year, he returned to Kano and was employed by Sir Steve Adehi, SAN from 2007 to 2009. He got married in 2008 to his beautiful wife, Mrs Binta V. Magaji on the 20th of December, 2008 and is blessed with three children, Suleiman Magaji, Musa Magaji and Maryam Magaji.

As an astute legal practitioner, he has handled cases at the various cadre of courts in Nigeria and has prosecuted over 400 cases at the High Courts, over 70 at the Court of Appeal and over 20 at the Supreme Court.  He is also a guru in land matters, recoveries, matrimonial causes, criminal cases and so on.
