Man City could be expelled from Premier League
The long-term future of Man City could be in serious doubt after the Premier League hit the club with over 100 breaches of financial rules.
There is a range of sanctions that could be applied to the club, should they be found guilty of such wrongdoing, including potential expulsion from the Football League.
As per The Telegraph, the English Football League would not be required to accept the reigning Premier League champions into their competition if they were to be kicked out of the Premier League.
At present, there are 72 spots available across the Championship, League One and League Two.
Should Manchester City be expelled from the Premier League without suffering relegation, then the Football League would have the logistical issue of altering its pyramid in order to accommodate the club. They would not be obliged to do so.
Expulsion from the Premier League is deemed to be the most severe punishment on a list of possible sanctions if the Citizens aren’t successful in appealing the charges.
Other possible sanctions range from a points deduction to a suspension of playing league matches.
City are set to go head-to-head with the Premier League as they attempt to clear their name, with the club adamant that they are clear of any wrongdoing.
A statement posted to the club’s official website following the announcement read as follows:
“Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.
“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.
“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
They will do so in a lengthy legal battle, one which will be overseen by the Premier League’s Judicial Panel, which is headed by an Arsenal fan, Murray Rosen KC.
