Man City fans blame one person for Real Madrid defeat

Man City fans blame one person for Real Madrid defeat

Manchester City fans have voiced their fury at one individual following their Champions League quarter-final shootout defeat to Real Madrid.

Defending champions City were eliminated from the competition on Wednesday night by 14-time winners Madrid.

The Spanish side triumphed 4-3 on penalties after the tie ended 4-4 following a hugely entertaining 180 minutes of football plus extra time.

The tie was finely poised heading into the second leg at the Etihad after last week’s enthralling 3-3 draw in Spain.

Rodrygo put the La Liga side ahead with an early goal in Manchester before City star Kevin De Bruyne equalised in the second half to send the match to extra-time.

Neither side could find a winner in the additional period, forcing the tie to go to penalties.

Bernardo Silva had the chance to put City two goals ahead in the shootout after Luka Modric missed Madrid’s first penalty following a successful spot-kick from Julian Alvarez.

But the Portugal international was made to wait after a fan in the home end refused to return the ball, which had been kicked into the crowd in frustration by Modric.

After a period of waiting, the ball was eventually thrown back onto the pitch.

But the delay seemingly put off Silva, who shot straight into the arms of Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Mateo Kovacic then missed City’s next penalty to hand Madrid the initiative in the shootout, with Antonio Rudiger going on to score the decisive penalty for the visitors to seal a famous win away from home.

City fans were quick to voice their anger at the supporter who made Silva wait to take his penalty.

“Very City of our own fans to hold on to the ball for ages so Bernardo over thought it,” wrote one fan on X.

“Congrats to the sh*** fan who iced Bernardo by not throwing the ball back. Genius,” added another.

“That City fan who held onto the ball before the Bernardo Silva penalty is definitely up for prat of the week,” wrote a third.

While a rival fan added: “City fans caused it, what happened to the ball and why was there no other balls around.”
