MONEY LAUNDERING: Court of Appeal to Decide if Shekarau, Aminu Wali Have Case to Answer

Court of Appeal to Decide on Shekarau, Aminu Wali

The Kano Division of the Court of Appeal, on Wednesday, reserved judgement in an interlocutory appeal filed by former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a N950 million money laundering case.

Shekarau was arraigned alongside Aminu Bashir wali and one Mansur Ahmad in 2018 for allegedly collecting the sum of N950 million from erstwhile minister of petroleum resources, Deizani Alison Maduekwe, for onward distribution to PDP members in Kano during the 2015 presidential election.

Shekarau, now a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was challenging the ruling of the Kano division of the Federal High Court which ruled that EFCC has a prima facie case against him.

The Federal High Court had decided that EFCC has established a prima facie case of alleged money laundering against the defandants.

Shekarau, Bashir wali and one Mansur Ahmad had appealed against the ruling of Federal High Court presided by Justice Lewis Allagoa wherein he overruled the no case submission of the defendant’s counsel.

Appellants’ counsel told the appeal court that there was no case of money laundering against his clients, saying Aminu wali received the money in question through a financial institution and asking the court to dismiss the ruling of the Federal High Court.

EFCC’s counsel however said there were irregularities in the transaction between the bank and the Aminu Wali, asking the court to dismiss the appeal and affirm the ruling of the Federal High Court.

Nigerian Sketch reports that the Court of Appeal to decide on Shekarau, Aminu Wali’s case  the will communicate a date to all the parties to deliver its ruling in the case.
