MUHUYI MAGAJI: Court officials abscond as former PCACC boss meets bail conditions

Former chairman of a Kano State anti-corruption agency, the Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, would be compelled to remain under police custody, even though he has been granted bail.

Nigerian Sketch reports that the former anti-graft czar has met all the bail conditions slammed on him by a state Magistrate’s Court, but all the court officials have absconded, making it practically impossible for him to regain his freedom on Friday.

An associate of the ex-PCACC boss said he suspects that the Magistatre and the state government “delibratelty connived to keep Muhuyi unlawfully incarcerated. They granted him bail for fear of balcklash, but they instructed all the court’s satff to leave so that noone would be around to process his bail.

Our repoter, who went to the court to ascertain the claim, found that the court’s registry was deserted and all attempts to get Chief Magistrate Gabari on phone were not succesful.

Rimungado was arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja on Thursday shortly after undergoing screening as a governorship aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party for Kano governorship race, and was arraigned before the court on Friday for giving false information to the police.

Chief Magistrate, Aminu Gabari, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000, with two sureties that should include maternal or paternal relations of the defendant and the Chief Imam of Sharada or Ja’en Jumuat Mosque.

Gabari also directed the defendant to submit his travel documents to the court.

Rimingado was invited to appear a Kano State House of Assembly committee over issues surrounding his suspension as PCACC chairman, but he did not attend the hearing, saying he was sick and submitting a medical report.

The House later claimed that the medical report he submitted was forged and reported him to the police.

While nothing further was heard about the House committee’s probe, the issue of the alleged forged medical report has taken the front burner, even though Rimingado had denied any wrong, saying a medical personnel issued the report.

There have been several foiled attempts to arrest him in Kano, as his plea to a court of law to restrain the police from arresting him was not granted.
