Nasiru Adamu Aliyu: The Teacher Advocate Who Now Adorns the Silk
Nasiru Adamu Aliyu (PhD), SAN one of the 72 Nigerian lawyers newly conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and one of the only two from the Kano branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has what it takes to answer the name of a senior advocate.
Nigerian Sketch took a peek into his sojourn as a Nigerian lawyer and brings you the highlights of a career that took the man through different aspects of the profession to arrive at the very juncture he is now.
Born on 28th December 1968 in Jigawa State, he underwent all his primary and secondary education under the watchful eyes of strict parents who knew what it meant to bestow the legacy of education on their children.
He then went to Bayero University, Kano where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Law between 1989 and 1994 before proceeding to the Lagos campus of the Nigerian Law School in 1995.
He proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria for his Master’s Degree in Law between 2002 and 2006 where he researched on ‘Civil Procedure: Judicial Resolution of Election Disputes in Nigeria,’ from where he went for his PhD in International Law at the Wuhan University, Hubei Province, China between 2006 and 2010.
In between his educational pursuit, Dr. Nasiru had also continued to practice law as a profession while equally teaching and had specialized in the areas of Criminal Litigation, Criminal Law, Election Petition, Public International Law, Emergence of Right to Election and Democracy, Democracy and International Law, Chinese Democracy and International Law.
As a practitioner, he has worked at the law firm of Bashir Nasiru & Co. in 1998; A. A. Umar & Co. as the Head of Chambers from 1997 to 2017, and then as a Partner from 2017 to Date.
From 1996 to1999 he was Assistant Prosecutor, Defunct Failed Banks Tribunal in Nigeria, and from 2014 to date, he has been the Lead Prosecutor, Medical and Dental Tribunal.
In 2011, he was made the Head, Legislation and Standard Department, Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP), a United Nation Environmental Project (UNEP), Project under the Federal Ministry of Petroleum of Nigeria.
As a Law teacher, he has taught at the School of Legal and Islamic Studies, Ringim, Hussaini Adamu Polytechnic Jigawa State, Nigeria, as Lecturer III & Lecturer II between 1995 and 2000; Senior Lecturer, Lecturer I, Lecturer II, Nigerian Law School between 2001 and 2015; Head of Department, Professional Ethics & Skills and Head, Criminal Litigation, Nigerian Law School between 2005 and 2015; and Senior Lecturer, Department of Public Law, Faculty of Law, Bayero University, Kano from 2016 to date.
At the Law School and Bayero University, Kano, he had taught at various times, Criminal Litigation, Civil Litigation, Professional Ethics and Skills, Cyber Crime Law, Criminal Law, Company Law, Application of Penal Code and Legal System.
Married with children, this minister in the temple of justice is multilingual, as he speaks, in addition to his native Hausa, Fulfulde, Chinese and English languages.
