Nigeria Immigration gets new Comptroller-General

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of DCG Kemi Nanna Nandap as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

Tinubu’s adviser on media, Ajuri Ngelale, who announced this in a statement on Wednesday, said the appointment is effective from March 1, 2024.

“DCG Nandap takes over from Mrs. Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, whose term in office expires on February 29, 2024.

“Before her appointment as Comptroller-General, Nandap was the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of the Migration Directorate of the Service.

“The President anticipates that the new Comptroller-General will deepen the ongoing reforms in the service and create a robust mechanism for efficient and dedicated service delivery to Nigerians, as well as strengthen the nation’s security through proactive and effective border security and migration management.”

Nigeria Immigration overview

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is the government agency responsible for migration management in Nigeria. It was established in 1958 and operates under the Ministry of Interior. The NIS is tasked with enforcing laws and regulations related to the entry, stay, and exit of foreigners in Nigeria, as well as issuing passports and other travel documents to Nigerian citizens. The agency plays a crucial role in border security, combating illegal immigration, and facilitating legal migration processes.

Functions and responsibilities

The Nigeria Immigration Service has a wide range of functions and responsibilities, including the issuance of residence permits, border surveillance, detection of fraudulent documents, deportation of illegal immigrants, and collaboration with international organizations on migration issues. The agency also plays a key role in preventing human trafficking and smuggling activities across Nigeria’s borders. Additionally, the NIS is involved in the registration of migrants, refugee protection, and providing consular services to Nigerian citizens abroad.

Challenges and reforms

Despite its efforts, the Nigeria Immigration Service faces various challenges such as corruption, inadequate resources, outdated technology, and porous borders that make it vulnerable to security threats. In recent years, the agency has embarked on reforms to modernize its operations, improve efficiency, enhance border control measures, and combat transnational crimes. These reforms aim to strengthen the NIS’s capacity to effectively manage migration processes and contribute to national security.
