Nigeria Reacts to US’ Allegation of Violation of Religious Freedom

Nigeria Reacts to US’ Allegation of Violation of Religious Freedom

Nigeria’s minister of information, Lai Mohammed, has reacted to the insinuation by the United States that Nigeria violates people’s religious freedom.

He said in a press statement signed by his spokesman, Segun Adeyemi, that Nigeria does not engage in systematic and egregious religious freedom violations.

In the statement, which was issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the minister described the allegation as a case of honest disagreement between the two nations on the causes of violence in Nigeria.

The tune of the statement was respectful, diplomatic and measured, unlike the type he uses when responding to Nigerians’ criticism of the government.

Nigerian Sketch noticed that there was no abuse or name-callings in the statement.

The minister was quoted in the statement to have said the situation is not as it is perceived by the United States of America.

He said in the statement that “Nigeria does not engage in religious freedom violation, neither does it have a policy of religious persecution. Victims of insecurity and terrorism in the country are adherents of Christianity, Islam and other religions.”

He said Nigeria jealously protects religious freedom as enshrined in the country’s constitution and takes seriously any infringements of such freedom.
