NNPP suspends Kano South senator, 3 other lawmakers over alleged disloyalty
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has taken disciplinary action by suspending Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represents the Kano South District, along with three members of the House of Representatives.
The suspension was announced on February 24, 2025, and is attributed to alleged anti-party activities conducted by these lawmakers.
The NNPP leadership accused Senator Sumaila and the three representatives—Abdullahi Sani Rogo (Rogo Federal Constituency), Abdullahi Rurum (Rano/Kibiya), and Ali Maadakin Gini (Dala Federal Constituency)—of engaging in actions that contradict the party’s principles and values. These actions were deemed as gross misconduct, leading to their suspension.
The announcement of their suspension came shortly after Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), hinted at an impending mass defection from NNPP to APC. This context suggests a politically charged environment where loyalty to party lines is critical, especially with upcoming elections in 2027.

The suspension has sparked controversy within the NNPP itself. A factional chairman of NNPP in Kano, Senator Mas’ud El-Jibril Doguwa, dismissed the suspension as inconsequential and claimed that Hashimu Dungurawa, who announced it, lacked authority due to his status within the party structure.
Doguwa argued that despite any perceived disloyalty to Kwankwasiyya—a political movement associated with NNPP—the suspended members still retain their membership under the party’s recognized logo.
One notable incident that contributed to this disciplinary action was a wedding ceremony for Senator Sumaila’s daughter attended by prominent APC figures while NNPP members were notably absent. This absence raised concerns about loyalty and alignment with party objectives among its elected officials.
The suspensions reflect broader tensions within Nigerian politics as parties prepare for future elections. The potential shift of lawmakers from NNPP to APC could alter political dynamics in Kano State and beyond.
