Northern elders want all 2023 elections held on single day in March

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has appealed to the Council of State to look at the merit of holding all the elections in one day in March to avert negative security consequences.

The Council of State meeting is scheduled to be held on Friday.

NEF’s director of publicity and advocacy, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, in a text message Daily Trust said he sent to its correspondent, said the council should also advise President Muhammadu Buhari to review the timelines for ongoing currency exchange.

He did not explain how failure to hold the elections in March will result in any adverse consequence, nor did he reveal the kind of consequence he envisaged.

“I hope they will review the very difficult conditions under which the Nigerian citizen lives today, and advise on measures to relieve the poor, in particular of avoidable hardships. They should look at the merit of holding all the elections in one day in March to avert negative security consequences.

“The council should advise the president to review the timelines for ongoing currency exchange. It should assure the nation that our democracy is safe and our economic unity is not being threatened,” he was quoted to have said in the message.

The aftereffect of the naira redesign policy, coupled with the biting scarcity of petroleum products in Nigeria, have caused so much outcries that conspiracy theories about plans to truncate the elections have been flying around.
