Oldest Kano District Head, Sarkin Bai, Dies at 95

The Sarkin Ban Kano and District Head of Dambatta, Alhaji Mukhtar Adnan, is dead.

He died in the early hours of Friday after a brief illness according to family sources.

He was appointed as Sarkin Bai in 1954 as a successor to his father, Mohammadu Adnan, by the late deposed Emir of Kano, Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I.

According to a historian and writer on Kano Emirate, Ibrahim Ado Kurawa, Adnan was born in 1926.

He attended Dambatta Elementary School, Kano Middle School and Zaria Clerical School.

He started his working career in the Kano Native Authority where he served in various capacities before his elevation to the position of Sarkin Bai.

He was a member of the Federal House of Representatives during the first Republic.

He was also appointed the first Kano State Commissioner for Education in 1968.

He was the longest serving member of the Kano Emirate Council since the establishment of the Emirate in 19th century, just like his ancestor Dabon Dambazau, who was the longest serving member back in the 19th century.

He has served for sixty-three years as District Head, Councilor and Kingmaker.

He participated in the selection process of three Emirs: Sarkin Kano Muhammadu Inuwa (1963), Sarkin Kano Ado Bayero (1963-2014), Sarkin Kano Muhammad Sanusi (2014-) and Sarkin Kano Aminu Bayero in 2020.

Meanwhile, Jigawa State governor, Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar, was among the first sympathisers to sent condolences to Kano State governor over the demise of the late District Head.

In a statement by his special adviser on media and public relations, Habibu Nuhu Kila, early Friday said the governor described thedeath as “a great loss not only to his family and the people of KanoState but to the nation in general.”

he said the late Adnan “contributed immensely to the political development of this country …”
