Police mount manhunt for another Ganduje critic, Bashir Hayatu Gentile

Police mount manhunt for another Ganduje critic, Bashir Hayatu Gentile

It is not a good time for critics of Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as the state chief executive uses the Nigerian Police to hunt down those who are persistent in his criticism.

Reports on Tuesday revealed that the police in Kano are on the trail of an ardent critic of the governor, Bashir Hayatu Gentile, presumably on allegations of criminal defamation.

Similar allegation has been used as excuse to arrest, harass and jail other critics of the governor, Muaz Magaji and Abdulmajid Danbilki Kwamanda recently.

The trend always follows the same pattern; an invitation by the police over what they call ‘petition’, a manhunt, an arrest, an arraignment before same Magistrate, denial of bail on the day of arraignment, days in prison and an eventual granting of bail on stringent conditions.

Sources said after attempts to arrest Mr Gentile failed, the police now invited him for questioning over a petition against him.

Solacebase reported that the petition this time was through a proxy called Bella Kano, a revenue consultant engaged by Kano State government to boost its internal revenue.

Gentile is an associate of former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shekarau, and also an aide to the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan.

Many critics of the governor such as Barrister Sa’ida Bugaje and the publisher of Daily Nigerian, Jafa’ar Jafa’ar, have fled the country, fearing for their safety.

Spokesman of the Kano police command, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, told the press he was not aware of the situation as of the time this report was published.
