Senegal, Cape Verde sure for AFCON last 16, slim chance for Guinea

Senegal continued their title defense in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 with a hard-fought victory over Cameroon at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Friday evening.

With what promised to be a big night for the two sides, Senegal took an early lead through Ismaila Sarr.

The 25-year-old shot Senegal into the lead with 16 minutes showing on the clock following a teasing pass inside the box while he lurked behind and gleefully pounced on a rebound to register the game’s opener.

The Teranga controlled the second half as they ended the first half and they managed to double their lead.

Sarr turned provider this time after teeing a perfect pass to the waiting feet of Habib Dailo who made no mistake to slot in the cushioning goal for the Terranga Lions of Senegal.

Cameroon’s Jean Charles Castelleto slashed Senegal’s lead into two after rising highest to head home a cross from Oliver Ntcham on the 83rd minute to bring the game to 2-1.

The Indomitable Lions after scoring started mounting pressure on Senegal.

With just 2 minutes to end the game, Sadio Mane got his first goal of the tournament and Senegal’s third of the night.

He made no mistake after he was connected with a Pape Gueye pass to score. Andre Onana was beaten completely.

The win means Senegal have 6 points out of 2 games and have qualified to the knockout stage.

Cameroon need a win to progress to the knockout in their last game against Gambia on Tuesday.

Senegal will play their last group match against Guinea at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Tuesday, 23 January.

Cape Verde have booked their knockout ticket after a 3-0 win over Mozambique in their second group game of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023.

The Blue Sharks put up a dominant performance to pick the emphatic win.

Bebe scored the first goal for Cape Verde after a smooth start. He scored from a long distance direct free kick which beat goalkeeper Ernan.

The Blue Sharks despite leading kept pushing for the second. Their pressing yielded results on the the 51st minute after Ryan Mendes pounced on a defensive blunder to slot the ball into the net.

Kevin Lenini rounded up what was a demolishing exercise with a long range beauty. A rocket shot from a distance went straight into the net to give Cape Verde a comfortable lead.

Mozambique pulled no threats in-front of goal.

The Mambas have 1 point from the two games and will have to win against Ghana on Monday to hope for qualification to the knockout stage.

Cape Verde play Egypt next on Monday, 22 at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.

Guinea have a slim chance

Guinea beat Gambia to boost qualification chances

After drawing with Cameroon in their opening game of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023, Guinea recorded a win against Gambia. The two countries created few chances in the first half. It took 70 minutes before Guinea broke the deadlock through Aguibou Camara.

The 22-year-old finished off a great team play. He latched on to a pass from Morgan Guilavogui to score the opener. In search of the equalizer, Tom Sainfait introduced two attackers in Mohamed Badamosi and Ali Sowe into the game.

None of them managed to break the resolute Guinea defense. Guinea now have 4 points from two games and currently occupy the second position. They will play against already qualified Senegal at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Tuesday, January 23.

Gambia with no point will play Cameroon in their last game on Tuesday, January 23.
