STABBED TO DEATH: Why did married Kano woman allegedly kill young Bauchi man?

STABBED TO DEATH: Why did married Kano woman allegedly kill young Bauchi man?

The Kano command of the Nigeria Police Force has commenced investigation into the alleged murder of Nafiu Hafiz (38) by Hafsat Surajo (24).

Hafsat, a married woman has already been arrested by the police. Her husband, one Dayyabu Abdullahi was also arrested.

Newspaper reports about the murder of Nafiu came with different confusing narrations, some saying the deceased was owing the couple N10 million which he was supposed to refund in December, but could not pay. He supposedly went to the couple’s house to seek for extension of time but was stabbed to death by Hafsat who, alongside her husband sought to conceal her did by keeping his corpse in their house and at night calling his father that their son went to the hospital for the surgery and died in the process.

Nafiu’s parent became suspicious when they realized that their son’s remain was still dripping with blood, even though the couple claimed that they had invited an Imam to bathe and robe him for Islamic burial rites. They called the police.

Police spokesperson for the Kano command, Haruna Abdullahi, confirmed the incident, adding that an investigation is ongoing to bring the perpetrators to book.

In a press statement, Abdulahi said, “On 21/12/2023 at about 0700hrs, report was received from one Hafizu Salisu of Bauchi Metropolis of Bauchi State that he received a phone call from one Dayyabu Abdullahi ‘m’ of Unguwa Uku Quarters Kano that his brother one Nafi’u Hafiz aged 38 years, is dead and that they should come and convey the corpse for burial.

“When they arrived at the residence at Unguwa Uku Quarters Kano, they discovered several injuries on different parts of the lifeless body suspected to be knife stabs.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, directed the Divisional Police Officer, Zaria Road Division, SP Abubakar Chika Zaki, to lead a team of detectives to the scene and to conduct a preliminary investigation.

“Upon arrival at the crime scene by the detectives, the motionless body was removed from the scene and rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where a medical doctor certified the body dead.”

Abdullahi added that further investigation led to the arrest of Hasfat Surajo, aged 24 years, a female housewife of the residence where the deceased lived, stressing that Hafsat admitted that she singlehandedly committed the act by stabbing the deceased on several parts of his body with a knife while he was preventing her from committing suicide.

“Her husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, aged 38 years, ‘m’, of the same address, and their gateman, Mallam Adam, aged 65 years, were arrested for packaging and concealing the dead body and cover,” the statement added.

He further said that the knife stained with blood recovered from the crime scene would be subjected to thorough and discreet investigation, after which the suspect would be charged in court.

Domestic staff?

Another version of the incident was that the late Nafiu was a domestic staff to Hafsat and her husband, and that they lived in the same premises.

What has remained unsolved was how N10 million transaction could transpire between a house help and his bosses. The story has unanswered questions.

But there was no doubt that there was a cordial relationship between the late Nafiu and Hafsat when he was alive. They were allegedly seen travelling together on a number of occasions even in the absence of her husband.

In Northern Nigeria and most Muslim communities, a married is not allowed to travel alone with a man not her husband or member of her immediate family with whom she shares blood relation.

In an attempt to explain the odd alliance between the couple and the deceased, many theories have emerged, one of which tends to suggest that Hafsat’s husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, loved his wife to the extent that he became helpless in her presence. He could not deny her whatever she wanted, and was smothered into allowing his wife to do her businesses carrying Nafiu along.

A version of the story said Nafiu and Hafsat had been friend even before she married Dayyabu, and after her marriage she reached out to him for partnership in business, which was prospering to a certain extent and, after her marriage, she introduced her business partner to her husband. They all appeared to be comfortable in the alliance to the extent that when the couple were relocating to a new house in Unguwa Uku, they moved in with Nafiu.

Sometime earlier in 2023, Nafiu was said to have told his parents in Bauchi that he had some health challenges. They came to visit him in Kano and he introduced Dayyabu to them as his ‘boss’. The parents returned to Bauchi after their visit.

At a point, Nafiu was said to have told Hafsat that he had found a woman he wanted to marry, and thing began to spiral afterwards, until the news of his alleged murder was broken.

Hafsat and her husband have a baby boy.

Although, there are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding Nafiu’s alleged murder, the police will be interested in establishing who killed him and perhaps the motive for committing the crime. The supposed confession of Hafsat may not be sufficient in a culpable homicide trial.

Did he really die of the alleged knife stabs he received, or there were other intervening health issues that may have caused his death?  Was she truly alone in the commission of the crime or not? Who were involved in the attempt to cover up the alleged crime and why?
