Tinubu says Democracy Day misstep was swaggered Yoruba ‘dobale’

Tinubu says Democracy Day misstep was swaggered Yoruba ‘dobale’

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has reacted to his fall at the Eagle Square, Abuja, on Wednesday morning, making a big joke out of it.

The president missed his step and fell while entering a vehicle for a parade to commemorate his country’s Democracy Day.

Speaking at a dinner, the president referred to the fall as “Swagger”, saying social media is confused about it.

“Early this morning, I had a swagger and it’s on the social media. They are confused whether I was doing buga or doing babbaringa, but it is a day to celebrate Democracy while doing dobale for the day. I am a traditional Yoruba boy, I did my dobale,” he said.

In the Yoruba culture, to dobale means “to prostrate or give honor” to someone.

He said the social was confused by what happened as watchers could not understand what he did.

According to him, while celebrating Democracy, “I ‘dobale’ for democracy,” (meaning I bowed and paid homage to Democracy).

Tinubu’s political foes have earlier reacted to the incidence, with Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi expressing their sympathy.

Both were presidential candidates for opposition political parties during Nigeria’s 2024 elections, which Tinubu won.

Obi reacting hours after the incident on his X handle, expressed sadness over the incident, a reaction many Nigerians considered as ‘humane’

Obi wrote: “I was saddened to learn of President Tinubu’s unfortunate fall today. I wish him well. We achieve nothing by gloating about an accident that could well happen to any of us.”

“We are all human beings and, while we profoundly disagree on how to move Nigeria forward, we must remember our common human frailty. Let us stay focused on the issues that will lead to a new Nigeria.

“May this moment serve as a poignant reminder of our shared humanity and the need for compassion, empathy, and unity in our pursuit of a brighter future for our great nation.”

The media in Nigeria reported that President Tinubu missed his step and fell while walking into a vehicle that would convey him for a parade at Eagle Square in commemoration of Democracy Day.

In his own response, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who contested against Tinubu in Nigeria’s 2034 presidential election tweeted: “I sincerely sympathise with President Bola Tinubu, @officialABAT, over this unfortunate incident as he was set to review the parade on Democracy Day. I do hope that all is well with him. -AA.”
