Use Twitter in Nigeria, Go to Jail, FG Threatens

Any Nigerian who uses Twitter after the federal government has banned Twitter operations in the country may go to jail for violating government’s directives.

Such violators will face prosecution, says the nation’s attorney-general and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami on Saturday.

Reports have it that Nigerians have been using the Virtual Private Networks to circumvent the ban.

Nigeria’s minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced on Friday that the government has suspended Twitter operations in the country.

The federal government took this decision after Twitter deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari on civil war on Thursday.

A statement by the media aide to the AGF, Umar Gwandu, said the minister had directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) to commence in earnest the process of prosecuting violators of the de-activation of operations of Twitter in Nigeria.

Gwandu wrote that “Malami directed the DPPF to liase with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, National Communication Communication (NCC) and other relevant government agencies to ensure the speedy prosecution of offenders without any further delay.”
