Viral video shows Argentina’s assistant manager shed tears after Lionel Messi’s goal against Mexico
Pablo Aimar was reduced to tears when Lionel Messi broke the deadlock for Argentina against Mexico on Saturday night.
The Copa America winners played out a must-win clash against Mexico at the Lusail Stadium and needed to respond after suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening group game.
They were frustrated by El Tri in the first half of the Group C game but then Messi, Argentina’s captain, talisman and record goalscorer came up with a moment of magic.
In the 63rd minute, Messi produced an exquisite touch before smashing in a stunning strike past Guillermo Ochoa from the area.
The Argentina fans erupted in noise as Messi sprinted over to celebrate his eighth World Cup goal. On the bench, assistant manager Aimar, who played 52 times for his country, could not contain his emotions.
A viral video showed the former Valencia and Benfica magician in tears, wiping his eyes and breathing heavily. It meant so much to the 42-year-old.
Messi too was emotional and was seen pointing to the skies after equalling Diego Maradona’s World Cup goals tally.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner then turned provider, assisting a sumptuous second from Enzo Fernandez to secure a monumental winner for Lionel Scaloni’s men.
Argentina are now second in Group C, level on points with Saudi Arabia but with a superior goal difference.
They are also one point behind next opponents Poland after they beat the Green Falcons 2-0 in the early kick-off.
Argentina need a win on Wednesday at Stadium 974 to ensure passage to the round of 16.
