Wayne Rooney Considered to Take Charge of Newcastle United
Wayne Rooney has been named on the shortlist to become Newcastle United‘s new manager, according to SPORTbible in an exclusively report.
The medium quoted a source close to the new owners and the former Manchester United forward to have said Rooney is in the frame to replace Steve Bruce at St James’ Park.
The 35-year-old, who is currently in charge at Championship side Derby County, would be interested in taking the role.
Rooney’s future at Pride Park continues to be a huge talking point after it was announced they would go into administration.
Derby have formally appealed against the 12-point deduction handed to them last month but their situation looks bleak as they sit bottom of the Championship table on three points.
The Rams could only secure a point in a frustrating 0-0 draw against Preston on Saturday.
In regards to the Newcastle post, Rooney now joins the likes of Roberto Martinez, Steven Gerrard and Unai Emery on Newcastle’s radar as they step up their search for a new manager.
It was expected that Bruce would be dismissed ahead of Sunday afternoon’s clash against Spurs as rumours continued to swirl surrounding his future.
In fact, during the Premier League clash at St James’ Park, a number of Newcastle fans chanted for him to be sacked.
The Magpies suffered a 3-2 defeat in front of the new owners as goals from Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min sealed a deserved win for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
After the full-time whistle, Bruce – who celebrated his 1,000th game as a manager – admitted he was unsure about his future at the football club.
“I’ll wait until they see fit and we’ll see what they are going to say,” he said. “You better ask somebody else about that one.”
Amanda Staveley, who has led the Saudi Arabia-backed consortium in their bid to take over at Newcastle, has outlined their ambitions ahead of the new era.
