Why Ganduje’s daughter wants out of 16-year-old marriage
Asiya-Balaraba Ganduje, a daughter to Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is seeking to be let out of her 16-year-old marriage to Inuwa Uba.
Sources said her parents are behind her move, and that she was being pressurised to legally ease out of the union.
Since she’s the one desirous of opting out of the marriage, she had to approach a Shariah Court to commence a process known as Khul’ in Islamic Matrimonial Law.
Khadi Abdullahi Halliru, who presided over her case at the Hausawa Shariah Court, after hearing her and her husband out, gave them two weeks to think over the matter and try to resolve their differences, if any, before coming to the court on the 5th day of January, 2022.
The case, which the judge, in a strange manner, decided to hear in his chambers, was said to be masterminded by the wife’s family.
A case of Khul’ is the type that the wife initiates without alluding to any fault of the husband. Scholars said it is based on the consideration of emotional detachment, where the wife claims that she just does not love the husband any longer.
She may have to return the dowry he paid on her head if she succeeds in the case. In fact, she may be asked to pick the expenses for the man’s new wife.
Meanwhile, Asiya-Balaraba’s husband has told the court he was not willing to let his wife go, as he thinks he could persuade her to change her mind.
DAILY NIGERIAN reported that a few years back, the governor’s daughter had fallen out with her parents for standing by her husband, whom they allegedly accused of “amassing wealth” belonging to them.
The newspaper said when the governor’s daughter succumbed to the family pressure and dumped the husband, armed security operatives were sent to break into the couple’s mansion at Technical Staff Quarters, and carted away title documents of his properties.
The properties, according to the sources, include a rice mill along Kano-Zaria Road, an event center, a house in Abuja, filling stations, among others.
