2027: Lagos PDP, other groups reject Seyi Tinubu’s endorsement as governorship candidate
The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed firm opposition to the potential candidacy of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as a successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2027 gubernatorial elections.
The political landscape in Lagos State was recently stirred by endorsements of Seyi Tinubu as a potential candidate for the governorship in 2027.
Several groups have publicly endorsed Seyi Tinubu for the upcoming gubernatorial election. Notably, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) and Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST) have praised his leadership qualities and philanthropic efforts, suggesting he would be a suitable successor to current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. These endorsements were made during meetings and press conferences aimed at rallying support for his candidacy.

However, these endorsements have faced significant opposition, particularly from the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
PDP’s response
In stark contrast to these endorsements, the Lagos PDP has firmly rejected the notion of Seyi Tinubu succeeding his father in governance.
Hakeem Amode, the spokesperson for the Lagos PDP, articulated this rejection clearly by stating that “Lagos will not serve him.” He emphasized that governorship should not be treated as an inheritance or a familial entitlement. This sentiment reflects a broader concern among some political stakeholders about dynastic politics in Nigeria.
Amode further questioned whether it is appropriate for a son to inherit such a significant role from his father, arguing that governance should be based on merit rather than lineage. He pointed out that many residents of Lagos did not support President Bola Tinubu in the last presidential election, indicating that they are unlikely to back his son’s candidacy.
Criticism from other groups
The backlash against Seyi Tinubu’s endorsements extends beyond the PDP. The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths has also condemned any attempts to position a member of the Tinubu family for governorship, insisting that non-indigenes should not lead Lagos State. This highlights a growing sentiment among certain groups who feel strongly about local representation in governance.
The situation has sparked intense debate within political circles and on social media platforms. Critics argue that promoting Seyi Tinubu is part of a broader strategy to maintain power within one family, which could undermine democratic principles and local governance. Prominent APC members like Joe Igbokwe have dismissed these endorsements as distractions aimed at undermining President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
APC’s response
In response to these developments, officials from the All Progressives Congress (APC) have downplayed discussions regarding the 2027 elections as premature and urged focus on current governance issues instead.
Overall, while there is evident support for Seyi Tinubu from certain youth groups and political allies, significant resistance from established political entities like the PDP suggests that his path to candidacy may be fraught with challenges.
