Gunmen invade Benue communities, resulting in 13 deaths

Gunmen suspected to be armed herders on Sunday evening invaded communities in Benue State, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals.

The tragic event has heightened fears among local residents and raised concerns about ongoing violence in the region.

The attack occurred in multiple locations within Benue State, specifically targeting communities such as Mbagena, Dikpo, and Imande Gberihwa in the Katsina/Ala Local Government Area.

Reports indicate that the gunmen struck around 7 PM when many community members were at home. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene where gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on anyone in sight for over an hour.

Local officials confirmed that thirteen corpses were recovered from the scene, with several others reported missing. Additionally, seven individuals sustained severe injuries and were initially taken to a health facility before being transferred to a more equipped hospital for further treatment1. The violence also led to widespread displacement, with many residents fleeing their homes due to fear of further attacks.

In response to this violent incident, Shaku Justin, the Council Chairman of Katsina/Ala Local Government Area, along with other officials including Solomon Wombo, a representative from the Federal Constituency, visited affected areas to provide reassurance and assess damage. They announced the establishment of emergency camps for displaced populations at Abaji.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and condemned the attack as barbaric. He emphasized that his administration is committed to enhancing security measures in response to such incidents and vowed that those responsible would be held accountable. The governor’s statement highlighted ongoing efforts to collaborate with local law enforcement and community leaders to restore peace and security in affected regions.

This incident is part of a pattern of violence in Benue State, which has been plagued by conflicts primarily between nomadic herders and local farmers over land and resources. These clashes have escalated over recent years due to various factors including competition for grazing land and water resources exacerbated by climate change. The situation has resulted in significant loss of life and property across numerous communities.

The recurring nature of these attacks has led many residents to feel insecure and vulnerable. Reports indicate that some areas have become nearly deserted as people flee from persistent violence.
